Choosing the location, configuration, and customization of the smart locker are all steps that customers should consider before getting a smart locker installed. Sales representatives help with this process by asking guiding questions, clarifying customer needs, and providing helpful information from Smiota.
Talking with sales representatives is a great way to help guide you through the smart locker decision process. These representatives will help you with all the considerations listed below. It is easy to set up a meeting with someone from the sales team to facilitate the smart locker installation and decision process. The sales team can also provide clients with various quotes for how much different smart lockers will cost.

Choosing a location for your smart locker installation is a critical consideration. The location must be big enough for the unit and have access to power and internet. The location should also be easily accessible for users of the smart locker and for couriers dropping off packages.
The first consideration for the location of a smart locker is whether it will be indoors or outdoors. If the locker is going to be outside, it needs, at a minimum, a five foot awning to cover the entire unit. This protects the unit from rain, snow, and UV light while also creating a more inviting space for locker users.
If the unit is going to be inside, pick a place with at least 80 inches of height, 25 inches of depth, and 20 to 40 inches of width (for a half-bank and full-bank smart locker, respectively). If you want to include additional locker units, make sure there is enough width in the space to accommodate them.
Whether the locker will be inside or outside, it needs a standard 110V wall plug in the U.S. or a 220V wall plug in Europe. If the smart locker has additional temperature controlled units, it may need to use additional wall plugs.
Hardwired Ethernet connectivity is recommended due to its higher reliability. WiFi or LTE can also work for smart lockers. However, if the smart locker is using WiFi or LTE, it needs a reliable and consistent connection to function properly.
Not all smart lockers are made the same! In fact, Smiota’s smart lockers are highly customizable for client’s particular needs. Before smart locker installation, a client must decide the configuration, temperature, and materials of their desired smart locker.
Smiota’s smart lockers come in a broad variety of standard configurations. This variety helps customers tailor the smart locker to their particular space. If these standard configurations don’t work, Smiota also makes customized smart lockers.Customers should consider a handful of questions when deciding the configuration of their smart locker.
First, how much smart locker capacity does the facility need? Is there enough demand to warrant 50 smart locker doors or just a dozen? What type of things will go in the smart locker? If they are particularly tall objects, the locker will need XL doors. If the locker is primarily for mail parcels, many small doors would be best. Smiota’s lockers come in configurations from one XXL door in a half-bank to 28 small doors in a full-bank unit and tons of variety in between those two extremes.
Smiota smart lockers can be ambient temperature, heated, refrigerated, or freezing. The temperature controlled units come in 8-door, full-bank configurations.
Smart lockers can be customized to fit the branding of different businesses. Units can be vinyl wrapped and made from special materials. There are tons of options to make smart lockers look at home in any circumstance.
If a smart locker is in stock, it will arrive within three weeks of signing an agreement. If the locker is not in stock and needs to be manufactured or customized, it can take up to twelve weeks from the signing of the agreement until it arrives.
Skilled contractors deal with every aspect of the smart locker installation. This entire physical installation process takes one to two days, depending on the scale and complexity of the smart locker system.
Once the smart locker is installed, the client can interface with the locker through the Smiota Mailroom app. If any troubleshooting issues come up, Smiota has service personnel available 24/7 to answer questions.
Always order conservatively because it is easy to add on additional smart locker units, but Smiota will not take units back after they have been purchased and installed.
Smart locker installation is easier than it seems. With professional assistance and highly trained personnel, Smiota makes smart locker installation and ordering pleasantly simple.

]]>The post Success Story: Spokane County Jail appeared first on Smiota.
]]>Such was the case for Spokane County’s facility. But Sergeant Gigi Parker of Spokane County Detention Services was determined to find a solution. She reached out to Smiota, and Spokane County Jail soon became the first to use Smiota’s smart lockers for managing inmates’ belongings.
For many years, Spokane County Jail had no secure options for storing offenders’ personal belongings at their facility. Instead, officers had to go through the cumbersome process of manually tagging and boxing items for each offender, then transporting those items to an off-site storage location.
Each time an offender was released on bail or moved to a long-term facility, someone had to drive over to the storage site, pick up the offender’s belongings, and bring them back to the jail.
All those trips back and forth took valuable time away from the officers, time they weren’t able to spend protecting and serving their community.
Smiota installed both indoor and outdoor locker units, bringing a total of 156 locker doors to the jail premises. Now, officers have a secure place to store belongings right on-site, so they no longer need to travel to and from a separate storage facility.
Smiota also designed a custom software solution with two flexible workflows for property pickup. So offenders or their family members can quickly and easily pick up their belongings from the lockers on their own — no need for officer presence.
Here’s how managing an inmate’s personal belongings works at the jail now:
Workflow 1: Short-term storage
If an offender is only in temporary custody, an officer deposits their belongings into a locker compartment using only an incident number. Upon their release, the offender simply needs to enter that incident number to collect their items — no other personal information is required.
Workflow 2: Long-term transfers
If an offender is moving to a long-term facility, an officer can enter the contact information of the offender’s family or friends. The system automatically notifies the family member or friend that the belongings are ready for pickup. That person can then use a provided QR code or passcode to retrieve the items.
In the event that the offender’s contact person fails to pick up the items within a reasonable time, Spokane County can choose to donate, auction, or destroy the personal property. Proceeds from auctioned items go to the Inmate Welfare Fund.
The on-site lockers and accompanying workflows have already made a significant difference for Spokane County Jail:
Smiota worked closely with Sergeant Parker to tailor the smart locker solution to Spokane County’s needs. “It’s a hands-off approach to handling inmate property,” Sergeant Parker said. “It offers more convenience for the facility and the friends and family of the incarcerated.”
Because of her innovative leadership in this initiative, Spokane County recognized Sergeant Parker with a certificate of appreciation. And the success prompted Spokane County to consider a similar smart locker solution for their Mental Health Facility.

]]>The post How Retailers Can Use Smiota’s Smart Lockers for BOPIS Order Fulfillment appeared first on Smiota.
]]>BOPIS has several advantages for retailers. It’s not as risky or expensive as home package delivery, it uses existing store locations and staff, and it satisfies the growing number of consumers who prefer store pickup. It gives retailers a competitive edge.
For shoppers, BOPIS eliminates concerns about shipping, including package theft, damage, or loss, or the environmental impact of the delivery process. In-store pickup also allows customers to ensure their order is exactly what they want before they fully commit to the purchase.
But long lines at the customer service desk or staff shortages can slow pickup times and cause shoppers to take their business elsewhere. A successful BOPIS depends on the right technology — and automated locker systems are the perfect solution.
Here’s how Smiota’s smart lockers simplify the BOPIS process for both retail employees and their customers.
Thanks to extensive REST-based APIs, Smiota Urban PoDs (smart package lockers) integrate with existing backend systems to help with inventory management and order fulfillment. Once orders are secure in the self-service lockers, associates don’t have to be torn away from other tasks to assist with BOPIS pickups. Workers can also rest assured that sensitive grocery or pharmacy items will be kept fresh in refrigerated or frozen lockers until the customer arrives.
Here’s how it works.
How to drop-off orders into Smiota Urban PoDs using an order ID
1. Using the Smiota Urban PoD touchscreen, tap the “Back” button.
2. Tap on “I’m an Associate.”
3. Scan the QR code or enter the 5-digit pin on the associate badge.
4. Scan or enter the order number.
5. Select the locker size and type that’s most appropriate for the order, and the locker door automatically opens.
6. Place the order inside the locker and close the door.
7. If entering additional orders, repeat these steps.
8. After scanning or entering all the orders and placing them into lockers, tap “I’m Done.”
Customers will receive a notification that their items are ready for pickup. (On their way, they may even decide to stop in the store and shop for something extra.)
Forget the long wait at the customer service desk or tracking down store staff for help finding an order. The draw of online ordering is its simplicity, speed, and convenience, and that’s exactly the experience smart lockers deliver. They’re easy to use — it takes seconds to retrieve an order. And if the lockers are located outside the store, customers can complete their pickups anytime, day or night. All it takes is a few simple steps.
How to pick-up orders from Smiota Urban PoDs using an order ID
1. Using the Smiota Urban PoD touchscreen, tap “Pick-up Orders.”
2. Scan or enter the order number.
3. The locker containing your order opens. Collect your order and close the locker door.

]]>The post Success Story: University of Nevada Las Vegas appeared first on Smiota.
]]>When’s the last time you were able to give your student workers an immediate raise? That’s exactly what happened at the University of Nevada Las Vegas after they installed Smiota’s package delivery system in their residence halls.
Streamlining their package management system doesn’t just save UNLV money. It saves their residence hall staff time, too, so they can focus on their primary task of enhancing the student experience.
Here’s how UNLV did it.
How many packages do you think each student at UNLV receives each month? One, maybe two? Try 2.5.
While that might not seem like a lot, it can add up. UNLV has about 1,800 students living on campus and gets 6,500 packages a month. That’s over 80,000 packages delivered to residence halls each year.
In May 2017, this is what the package delivery process at UNLV looked like:
Every parcel arrived at the same central mailroom – the hub of the whole system. Staff manually logged each package that came through the door. Then, they shipped the packages off to one of four service delivery desks serving nine residence halls.
At the delivery desk, staff logged the packages again and placed slips for each package in the student’s mailbox. Students could then pick their packages up from a staffed desk between 10 am and 10 pm every day (one desk was open 24/7).
This might seem like a pretty straightforward system, but it still took quite a bit of time. From initial delivery to pick-up, each package took about 3.2 minutes of staff time. With 6,500 packages arriving each month, staff were spending 240 hours a month on package delivery. In dollars and cents, UNLV was spending over $200,000 each year in operating costs on package management alone.
Warren Porter, Director of Operations at UNLV, knew there had to be a better solution. In fact, when school let out for the summer, he promised his student workers that there would be a better system in place when they returned in the fall.
Initially, he had a hard time finding a company that understood his unique needs. Then, he found Smiota.
Mr. Porter provided all the information we needed to provide a unique solution for his residence halls. The result was a fully customized and integrated mailroom and smart locker delivery system.
In Mr. Porter’s words, this is how the technology helps UNLV meet the expectations of its students:
“Our students enter a social contract with the university and housing, and in that contract, they expect a unique living experience that will contribute to their personal growth and academic success. Generation Z has grown up with technology in all aspects of their lives, and a part of those expectations of the university are high-speed WiFi and other technological platforms that enhance the learning and living environment. The mail lockers, digital student ID cards, and digital keys are many examples of our efforts to create a safe and positive learning and living experience that allows students to focus on interacting with fellow residents and achieving academic success. What we have done here at UNLV is create a stressless process to receive mail that students now feel is a part of their unique experience living at UNLV.”
Here’s what the package delivery process at UNLV looks like now:
Packages still arrive at the central hub at UNLV. But now, the staff is armed with Smiota Mailroom software. Instead of having to log each package manually, the staff just points and scans, which begins the automated chain of custody process and assists with sorting.
Then, employees deliver the packages to Smiota’s smart lockers, called PoDs, in each residence hall. They currently have a total of 341 lockers installed. When a student has a package waiting for them, they’re automatically alerted via text, email, or the Smiota app. They can pick up their delivery at their convenience, often within minutes of notification.
The whole process takes 13 seconds per package.
Since they implemented Smiota Mailroom software and smart lockers, a few things have changed in UNLV residence halls.
First, the 24/7 package delivery desk closed, and desks are no longer double-staffed during peak package delivery and retrieval times. At the same time, staff productivity has doubled.
With the increased efficiency, Porter was able to save the school a significant amount of money. After is all said and done, UNLV will save $73,140 each year over the next five years.
And every penny of that money is going right back to the students.
The first thing Porter did was raise salaries for residence life and mailroom staff, who can now use the time they used to spend on package delivery enhancing the college experience for students. Porter is also investing in new resources for the residence halls, like SmartBoards for the study lounges, more student programming, and new furniture.

]]>The post Why Choose Smiota Package Management System? appeared first on Smiota.
]]>Package management systems are relatively new, so there aren’t a large number of options, but there are a few. Here, we identify some of the features (and red flags) to look for when assessing package management systems and explore what makes Smiota stand out.
Package management systems save your staff time and your building money. They also add value and allure to your property, which will help you attract new tenants (especially Millennials).
But not all systems are created equal.
In a previous article, we reviewed the factors to consider when choosing a package management system. Here are a few of the most important things to look for and to look out for.
It’s our mission to make managing your packages easier, faster, and more secure. We’ve worked hard (and we continue to work) to make the Smiota package management solution the best one available.
Smiota currently offers smart lockers and mailroom software packed with user-friendly features including an iOS and Android app. Read on to learn more about our solutions and how they can benefit you.
“By installing Smiota PoDs at 9 dorms and using Smiota Mailroom app, UNLV is saving thousands yearly and has made the package experience for students and staff exceptional!”
Smart lockers are the stars of modern package management systems. This is due to three main things:
Couriers can quickly access lockers by scanning a QR code or entering a pin. To choose a recipient and drop off a package, they search the resident database, choose which size locker they need, and pop the delivery in. They can be on their way in just minutes with full confidence the packages will make it to their intended recipients.
Receipt
Once a package is safely in a locker, Smiota’s software automatically notifies the recipient via text or the Smiota app. To access the locker, the recipient clicks a button in the app or keys in their unique code. That means no more digging around in emails for confirmation codes.
Smiota’s main PoD unit has 13 lockers (five small, six medium, and two large) along with the built-in control center. There are several add-ons available to supplement the main unit:
Chances are a few of your residents have already started using grocery or meal kit delivery services. While these services are wonderful for time-strapped folks and aspiring chefs, there is a downside: the subscribers have to be home when their kits are delivered. Otherwise, they run the risk of their food spoiling.
That’s where refrigerated lockers come into play. Instead of residents having to stay at home with phone in hand while they wait for their food delivery, refrigerated lockers offer them the freedom of flexibility. Frozen lockers are great for your staff as well because they don’t have to worry about food spoiling in the office.
Smiota’s refrigerated lockers are temperature-controlled and can be adjusted to accommodate frozen foods as well.
Your space is unique, and your lockers should be too. We can build a system customized for your layout, available space, and specific needs. PoDs don’t even have to be all lined up in a row. As long as your lockers are within WiFi or cellular network range of your main control PoD, they’ll work.
Smart lockers are convenient, safe, and a huge time saver, but they may not be right for your building. Even if you don’t have the space for lockers, you can still implement a safe, secure package management system for all deliveries using Smiota Mailroom.
Smiota Mailroom is a software that can turn any room into a secure package delivery center. All you need is a smartphone.
When a package comes in, just open up your smartphone and scan the recipient’s name and tracking barcode. Smiota Mailroom takes care of the rest in less than five seconds. No more recording deliveries manually!
Did one of your residents go a little nuts on Cyber Monday? Using rapid entry mode, you can enter their name just once and quickly scan all of their packages in a fraction of the time it’d take you to record every one individually.
Smiota Mailroom takes all the guesswork out of package delivery. It provides a complete chain of custody, including recipient signature. If a resident isn’t available to pick up their package, they can delegate someone else pick it up for them, and Smiota mailroom will track the entire transaction.
“Your team has been a pleasure to work with- you have created an amazing product for residential communities!”
We want Smiota to be the most convenient way to deliver and pick up packages. That’s why we built an app to use with our PoDs lockers and Mailroom software. Available for iOS and Android, the Smiota Delivery App makes picking up packages as easy as checking your Facebook feed.
With the Smiota app, users to simply walk up to the locker bank, hit a button on their smartphone, and viola! The locker opens — no access code needed. They’ll also be able to see the full package history: who delivered it, when it was dropped off, and where it was picked up. No more guesswork for you or your residents!
Our powerful administration tools make it easy to know what’s going on in your building. With our customizable reports, you can:
This helps you make decisions about the future. For example, do you need more refrigerated lockers? Is it time to start charging that couple in Apartment 204 who always wait two weeks to pick up their packages?
In addition to creating reports, admins can open lockers, manage overdue packages, and more using the Smiota webapp or PoD tablet.
Smiota offers 24/7/365 remote support, completely eliminating the need to call someone on site for maintenance. Our technical staff can remotely troubleshoot any problems you may have, and our PoDs update automatically for any new software releases.
Smiota was created by a team of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs led by CEO Manju Kashi. The idea for the package delivery solution came to him after experiencing package theft at his own front door. He realized package exchanges had to be done safely and securely. Along with his team, he employed his business savvy and vision for the perfect package delivery system to bring Smiota from concept to product in less than two years.
